Tsim Sha Tsui

Hong Kong Festive Season 2023

Sino Group & Rupert Newman join forces to present:

“In-Between the Sky : A Festive Beacon”

Winning 3 international awards, Rupert created this vast digital artwork for the city of Hong Kong. The spectacle was displayed on the 4,000 square-metre Sino LuminArt Façade of Tsim Sha Tsui Centre & Empire Centre for the festive season, November 2023 to February 2024.

“This piece is inspired by the dynamic energy & lively spirit of Hong Kong. The animated fractured shapes symbolise the city’s ever changing nature, & the dancing stars represent the dreams & aspirations of its people. The inclusion of festive messages adds a personal touch, turning the artwork into a communal expression of joy & well wishes”

In addition, Rupert invited renowned composer Sarah Warne to create music for the piece.

Rupert also collaborated with Terence Wong, Hong Kong’s “Father of the Festive Lights”, who turned his art motifs into traditional light installations. These installations were shown on the façades of Sino Plaza in Causeway Bay & China Hong Kong City in Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as Mody Lane in Tsim Sha Tsui East

For the past 40 years Sino Group has been leading the development of Christmas light installations in Tsim Sha Tsui, & this festive celebration is now embedded in the collective memory of the people of Hong Kong. In recent years, the installations have moved with the times; conventional light graphic with bulbs have become light facades that can broadcast digitally animated art.

Under Sino Group’s sustainable corporate social responsibility programme, the organiser has arranged post-secondary design students to meet with Rupert in the exchange of ideas. As well as preserving the heritage of Christmas lights, it also enables students to understand the latest art trends in order to inspire their creative development.
